So I've worked in Brentwood for 11 years, yet somehow had never visited Round Valley Regional Preserve, a smallish but scenic park just to the south of the city. I started hiking up at Mt. Diablo back in 2009, and after basically doing the same hikes for over a year I learned about all of the peak lists and I was off to the races chasing peaks and highpoints. Round Valley, despite its popularity lacks any real highpoints, and as such, had remained unvisited.

As it happened I was unable to hike the previous weekend, as Kyle and I went up to look at vacation places in South Lake Tahoe, and that took 6 hours, leaving no time to bag any peaks. Feeling incredibly lazy for not hiking anything, I decided I needed to visit Round Valley after work for a quick hike. It only took 15 minutes to arrive at the parking lot. There is a loop hike that circles the park, about 5 miles in length with 1,000 feet of elevation gain. A pretty tame affair but something that could be done easily after work. I started off by going left on the trail, and it wound slowly up the hillside, through grassy slopes until it crested at the halfway point. I noticed a minor peak to my right which was the highpoint of the area, although unnamed and lacking even 300 feet of prominence it isn't really a peak. From the top of the peak I had some nice views of Mt. Diablo as the sun began to set. There were also nice views back down toward Brentwood.

I continued on the trail as it descended in a steeper fashion before leveling off for the last mile back to the car. The round trip took about 1 1/2 hours at a pretty modest pace, and I left thinking that I could probably do the hike the next day before the City Council meeting, given that the meeting wouldn't start until 7 PM.
